Materialism = Poverty

Funny How this video portrays what our culture is today and counters it with the values and ethics that are clearly found and taught in the Bible. What they don’t know is that the Bible has been teaching this, in between the lines of scripture, for over 2,000 years! People were created in the image of God and made for relationship with the Father. But we are also to be the caretakers of our planet and the animals which live within it. “When people strongly endorse in Money, Image, and Status they are less likely to engage in ecologically beneficial activities….”, when people endorse these things not only are the worshiping and Idol, but they are also more concerned with themselves more than others. Which is one of many topics the Bible teaches to steer clear from, which is also what this video is combating. Scripture Verses on Idols noted here. We don’t only affect ourselves but those around us as well, which is what is taught throughout the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, Scripture References found here, Explanatory note found here. This is not only found in the Secular communities, but sadly also found in Christian communities, due to religious leaders (or fellow Christians) not confronting their brethren on the sins in which they have knowledge about Matthew 18:15-20 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector…”.

“The problem is, like the Pharisees, we prefer our safe religion over the death of our selfish spiritual aspirations…”

The Biblical definition of Idolatry; We become guilty of idolatry when we worship something other than or higher then God. The Lord says in the Second Commandment (found in Exodus 20)

The Secular definition of Idolatry; The excessive or blind adoration, reverence, devotion, etc towards something or someone… further defined in Wikipedia according to cultures and religions.

We are also taught to love our brothers and to carry their burdens, which requires us to care for all living people no matter their status. This includes those who our secular society call the bottom of the barrel i.e.. homeless, orphans, widows, the needy, the poor, the foreign, and to love them as we love ourselves and treat them the way we are supposed to be treated Scripture References. Another valid point that this video makes but they call it an intrinsic value.

“…and whoever would be first among you must be slaveof all.For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:44-45 ESV

“You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.” Exodus 22:22 – ESV

“My brothers,show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory.” James 2:1

Meaning of intrinsic value explained; “What does it mean for a thing to have “intrinsic value”? As the name indicates, to have intrinsic value means that a thing has value by the mere act of existing. One cannot add to one’s value or take away from one’s value; all things that of a group that are intrinsically valuable are all equally valuable. If we could add to intrinsic value, then the value is ultimately extrinsic. It is the same if we could take the value away. Thus, if value is intrinsic, it is the same for everyone.”
